No see'ums
Just spent a great week RVing at Oh Ridge Camp Ground except for being bitten by some unknown bug. Little welts and itch like crazy. Are they No see'ums? How do you locals cope? Any help would be greatly appreciated. ·

Yes, these tiny biting flies, referred to as no-see-ums, are prevalent in the sagebrush scrub country of the Mono Basin, and sometimes they are noticed here in the June Lake Loop. They prefer the drier sagebrush habitat such as is found at Oh! Ridge (in lakeside or streamside environments you will likely encounter mosquitoes instead.) No-see-ums can be terribly annoying, as they tend to bite around the hairline, and to buzz into the ear canals. Deet-based repellents can be effective against these insects: there are also some other products that people have used... for example, the Avon product "skin-so-soft" has been recognized by local lore to keep them from biting. As spring gives way to midsummer, these insects will subside. Insects

Thanks Dan for info. Will be sure to have both the products with us on our next trip to Oh! Ridge. |
