Dear June Lake Community Leaders:

The Sierra Business Council has enjoyed working with Mono County and the community of June Lake for the past 11 months. Your community is blessed with world class natural surroundings, and a wonderful human scale village. Conserving and showcasing June Lake’s unique natural assets, including the ridgelines, Carson Peak and the Lakes will be one of the best investments you can make for the community. The challenge is to maintain the character and essence of the your community as you grow to a year round resort community over the next 20 years.

Successful communities, like successful businesses, define the future they want to realize, then organize themselves to get there. You have defined your vision for the future through a series of workshops and public meetings, and you even wrote and rewrote the guidelines to help you get there. The June Lake Community Design Guidelines document is a toolbox for the community to use to build your community one site and one application at a time. Plans that are thorough and clearly articulate a community's desired results benefit everyone: project proponents, county employees and the community at large.

I encourage you to freely distribute this document and use the easy to use checklists to review projects. This tool box is divided into five main components: Community Structure, Commercial Core, New Resort/ Neighborhood Design, Residential Design and the Community Design Checklist. Use the appropriate sections of the checklist to both design and review project proposals. I recommend that you keep all of the completed checklists in a binder and review and update the document on a yearly basis based on input received.

Well designed and sited structures enhance the town's beauty, increasing the value of neighboring properties and the community as a whole. The quality of new construction will...either strengthen or undermine the communities prospects for a prosperous future. Like the community character workshop, I would encourage all members of the community to photograph interesting projects during their travels that would fit in June Lake and add them in Appendix 2 of the document. These will provide concrete examples to share with builders, developers and the community.

Remember - the natural surroundings and the pattern and scale of development are what distinguishes June Lake from other communities. I encourage you to be clear and demand quality growth that you will be proud of in your community for years to come.

Sincerely,

Darin Dinsmore
