President's Message – October 2012
The June Lake Loop Chamber of Commerce, a non-profit association, dates back to the 1950's. It was incorporated under the State of California in September 1961 as June Lake went from a summer resort to a year-round destination with the establishment of the June Mountain Ski Area. I once had the privilege to serve on the Board when I was younger, back in the 1980's. I am deeply honored to have been selected by the membership to preside with the June Lake Loop Chamber of Commerce during this momentous year of 2012.
Gratitude is due to all those individuals who have given their time and energy in this organization over the past, and as well to our current membership. I will also take this opportunity to introduce my fellow members on the Board of Directors: Jerry Allendorf (kiosk coordinator), Cheri Bromberger, Patrick Ferguson, Ralph Lockhart (vice president), Don Morton (treasurer), Karen O'Keefe (secretary), and Lynda Thompson.
The Chamber has been ongoing and active through recent years in staffing the information kiosk at June Lake Junction, providing a community website at junelakeloop.org, advertising and promotion in conjunction with the Mono County Tourism department and others, providing the streetside banners which are displayed downtown in the village, and supporting events such as the June Lake Triathlon.
June Lake has endured many challenges over time, and many would argue that those we face today are among the greatest: however, I truly anticipate that the resilience of our people will continue to prevail. We brave the winds of change, and somehow manage to sustain this unique place upon the planet as a vital community where it is a great joy to live, work, and play, for residents and visitors alike.
It is expected that the Chamber may be partnering in some of the activities provided throughout the winter in conjunction with plans being made by Mono County Tourism and the June Lake Revitalization Committee. We have already agreed to provide web space to host the new tourism site visitjune.com.
It is important to remember that although we may have common goals, the Chamber and the Committee are two separate organizations. The latest reports are out from the various Revitalization subcommittees:
- The newest word on Transportation is that we may have ESTA lines running on weekends and holidays only, with up to four round-trips from Mammoth per day.
- The lighting subcommittee's work is done.
- Have you seen the Billboard in Bishop?
- The first Press Release has been finalized (see attachment)
- Brochures are soon to be printed and distributed.
- Snow Play, and the Snowman Farm will be hosted by the Double Eagle Resort
- Some talks are underway regarding the future of June Mountain.
- The events subcommittee is planning the “Triple-Threat” snowshoe/xc/laser-rifle (biathlon+1) event, the Snowmobile event, and other events such as Saturday music shows. They are working hard on permits and other requirements. This is where community members will be able to have some fun and help the event succeed by participating or volunteering.
Community participation is a key element in our endeavor. Chamber membership is open to anyone sharing our objective of providing constructive civic services and the promotion of commerce to the Community and Mono County. Members will be invited to attend our regularly-scheduled Board Meetings to offer their input. For this year, the Chamber has also elected to offer “Associate” Memberships at no cost, to those who have a desire to be involved but are not in a position to pay membership dues.
We are also developing a “community contact” mailing list through junelakeloop.org in order to keep interested parties updated on the latest developments, so please continue to keep an eye on your email's Inbox.
Our next meeting will be held at the June Lake Community Center on Wednesday, November 14 at 10:00am. Members should be receiving an agenda as the date approaches.
Know that you are all appreciated! Thank you.
